Definitive Ranking makes its triumphant return to evaluate arguably the greatest Metroid game of all time - Metroid Prime! Andy and Doom dive deep into all ten categories, and no surprise, Metroid Prime scores high on almost everything!
Come play along, and as always, here’s the criteria for the Definitive Rankings:
- World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood)
- Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general)
- Story (what works, what doesn’t)
- Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?)
- Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like)
- Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical)
- Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.)
- Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.)
- Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?)
- Music (are we humming along?)
Of course, all of these are subjective, and we’re putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Twitter!

Andy is joined by Omega Metroid Reporter Daniel Hoctor to examine the story of a little mouse named Iko as he tried to reunite the five seperate pieces of his home island and restore his world! Alien In Review returns to tackle the third installment of the series that inspired Metroid: the much maligned Alien³. Directed by David Fincher, Alien³ places Ripley against a single Xenomorph on the abandoned prison on planet Fiorina. Andy and Gooey Fame go over the troubled development of the film, what we thought of the movies big twist at the beginning, how the reveal at the ending was handled, the differences between the much-better Assembly Cut (or extended cut, which they watched) versus the theatrical release, and how Alien³ wanders back into horror-movie territory, but phycological horror!
Buckle in for a long one, cause there is ton to talk about! Alien In Review will return in 2023 to continue the saga! In the meantime, if you like Andy and Goo talking movies, check out their other podcast Virtual Theater, a podcast about video game movies and the stories that shape them!

It's hard to believe, but it's been over a year since Metroid Dread released. This week, Andy and Dak are joined by Omega Metroid Website Reporter Griffin Olney to reminisce about their initial reactions to Dread being announced, the buildup towards the game and specifically whether or not Kraid should have been shown, how we feel a year later about some of the new powerups and features that the game introduced, see if our opinions on the story have changed, talk about areas that the next 2D Metroid could improve upon, and examine the state of the Metroid franchise in general one year after release.

After a brief hiatus, the boys are back in town, as Andy and Doom get together to talk the most topical thing going around the net: the Super Mario Bros Movie trailer! We give our reactions to the trailer, Chris Pratt’s Mario voice, the animation, and more, and then shift over to what everyone really wants to talk about: what could a possible Metroid movie look like? Andy and Doom both have pitches for stories, submit their casting choices for who should play these iconic characters, whether or not this movie should (or would likely be) animated or live action, whether the story should be an original tale or an adaptation of a game, and so much more!

Our recording schedules didn't quite line up this week, so instead of a new episode of the podcast, we're releasing a old episode that will be new to almost everyone! Super Duper Metroid, an incredible ROM Hack from Metaquarius and Daltone that reimagines Super Metroid with an emphasis on exploration and skill. Mapping Metroid returns, offering up a companion episode to our Tallon Overworld deep dive. This time, we're mapping two areas in one: the Frigate Orpheon! Come listen to us dissect the ship as it flies in space, talking about that Parasite Queen fight, the lore of the ship and what the Space Pirates are using it for, and how it serves as a perfect tutorial for players controlling Samus in 3D for the first time. AND THEN, we break down the Crashed Frigate, and how this dual purpose area offers an incredible platforming challenge, how this area was an example of the planet of Tallon IV fighting back, and that absolutely serene theme that plays while you're traversing underwater.
