This week, we had some last minute sickness ruin our recording schedule, so feast your eye on not one but TWO Metroid ROM Hack Reviews!
Metroid is a series known for its atmospheric feel, and in the latest ROM Hack Review, we’re looking at a hack that takes that atmosphere and elevates it to the next level! Created by Digital Mantra, V I T A L I T Y is a Super Metroid hack that places Samus on the planet Auriga, delving deeper into the mystery of the world and slowly realizing all is not what it seems. With an emphasis on story and atmosphere, including a huge late game twist, I’m excited to share thoughts on this dark tale! As always, you can check out the hack for yourself here!
We’re back with our (ahem) balls to the walls – Morph Balls, that is! In our latest ROM Hack Review, we’re taking a look at the unique B2-TW, a hack by Grime in which you play in Morph Ball form the entire time, jumping, bombing, puzzling, and even fighting enemies in close quarters with many a hazard around! A nice and short romp, B2-TW is definitely unique in it’s concept, but is the final product ballin’ or is it hori-ball? Come listen to find out, and click here to grab the game for yourself!

We're pitching a new stage for every game in the Metroid series! From some obvious picks like Phendrana and Tourian to less clear choices like the Genetics Lab and Maridia, we go over how all the stages could function, what stage hazards there might be, why Andy had a strict "no fire allowed" rule, the surprising amount of great Federation Force options, and so much more!

With Andy and Doom both hopelessly enamoured by The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, they guys take a break from exploring Hyrule to theorize how an open world Metroid game might work! Is the open world concept antithetical to a Metroidvania game? Could you have a Metroid-equivalent for Shrines? How would visors work in this environment? Is going 3D platformer the way to go versus first person? How could you keep the concept of locks and keys while pushing the idea that you can go anywhere? Alien In Review returns! After a long layoff, Andy and Gooey Fame are back to analyze the last Alien film in the Sigourney Weaver era, the oft-derided Alien Resurrection! We talk about its themes of motherhood and artificial intelligence, comment on how the plot of the movie mirrors that of Metroid Fusion, break down some of the crazy kills, and discuss how Alien Resurrection is very, very reminiscent of one particular Metroid game, for better or worse: Metroid Other M! All this, PLUS a little Tears of the Kingdom talk to get us going!

The most controversial Metroid game of all time returns to ignite debate and discussion, as this week, Andy and Dak are Definitively Ranking Metroid: Other M! We weigh in on the story, the gameplay, the music, and more to see where Other M went wrong, and more importantly, what areas the game excels at! Come play along, and as always, here’s the criteria for the Definitive Rankings:
- World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood)
- Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general)
- Story (what works, what doesn’t)
- Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?)
- Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like)
- Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical)
- Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.)
- Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.)
- Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?)
- Music (are we humming along?)
Of course, all of these are subjective, and we’re putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Twitter!

Our recording schedules didn’t quite line up this week, so instead of a new episode of the podcast, we’re releasing a old episode that will be new to almost everyone! Mapping Metroid returns to the B.S.L. Station to once again detail one of Metroid Fusion's ominous sectors - Sector 4 (AQA)! We're going in depth talking about the right-to-left layout and how unique it is; how some of the enemies like Evir and the Aqua Pirates remind us of Super Metroid; the dichotomy between the steely upper surface and the bright, colorful submerged parts; the Serris boss fight and how fun it is; if this Sector has the most underrated track in Metroid; our favorite expansions; and, of course, THAT hidden Easter Egg scene!

With the Super Mario Bros. Movie finally in theatres, we thought it would be a great time to revisit the idea of a Metroid movie! Rather than throw out specific ideas or casting choices (we did that already!), we talk a little more broadly, debating the advantages of live action versus animation and vice versa, what the right tone to strike for a Metroid movie would be, who are some directors that could really take it to the next level, if the story should be an adaptation of a single game or an amalgamation of games, what we would title the movie, and how John Wick might be the key to making a great Metroid movie!
