One of the most intriguing Metroidvania’s in recent years has to be the announcement of Bandai Namco’s Shadow Labyrinth, not only because it looks cool, but because it’s a wildly different take on the standard Pac-Man genre. Yes, that Pac-Man, the one who eats pucks and runs away from ghosts! Reimagined as a gritty Metroidvania, this game sees you control an unnamed Swordsman, traversing a giant maze, and combining with Puck, a floating orb companion, to unleash powerful attacks!
We were excited about the game when it was announced, and our friends at Bandai Namco must have noticed, because they have supplied us with a demo copy of the game that we had Doominal take for a test drive! We're talking about his experiences with the demo, which you can watch in full here, and what worked and didn't!
We're also playing a fun game of Metroid A-Z, inspired by Nintendo's awful Nintendo Today app, so come hang out!

Mapping Metroid is back, and we're going somewhere we've never went before: The Bottle Ship! That's right, after years and years of this podcast, we're finally covering an area from Metroid: Other M, and we're starting off with the sprawling and creepy Sector 1 Biosphere! We cover all the grand rooms in the area, discuss some of the imposing creatures, go over the many boss fights and power-ups, talk about the reveal of the bioweapons conspiracy, lament over the prolonged third-person slow walk session, and of course, give our thoughts on Little Birdie and it's evolution!

With the Switch 2 launching imminently, we decided to pay homage to the Nintendo Switch, one of the great Nintendo consoles of all time, and rank our top ten favorite games! From the obvious picks like Breath of the Wild, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and Smash Ultimate, to titles we advocate for like Pikmin 4, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, and Fire Emblem: Three Houses, to the shining jewel that is Metroid Dread we go over and share our memories of these games and reminisce about the era of the Switch.

This week on the pod is something a little different. Definitive Ranking returns! This week, we're examining Milton Guasti's Another Metroid II Remake, or AM2R, the fan game so unbelievably good we can rank it on the same level as official Metroid games! We're going through and ranking it by the same standards as we would an official Nintendo-made Metroid game, talking about the boss inclusions, how Metroid fights could have been implemented differently, some of the crazy expansions, and more!
Come play along, and as always, here’s the criteria for the Definitive Rankings:
- World / Atmosphere (the vibe, the setting, the mood)
- Art Style (design of Samus, the enemies, the graphics in general)
- Story (what works, what doesn’t)
- Pacing / Progression (are there any parts that really bog the player down, or is it still fun getting lost?)
- Gameplay / “Gimmick” (what new or different gameplay aspects we like)
- Items / Abilities (how are the powerups and are they cool and practical)
- Areas (how does each individual area look, feel, play, etc.)
- Enemies / Bosses (are they fun, creative, etc.)
- Expansions / Powerups (are the expansions hidden throughout the world fun, creative, and enjoyable to collect?)
- Music (are we humming along?)
Of course, all of these are subjective, and we’re putting our critics hats on, but we want to hear what you have to say on Bluesky!

We're back with another episode of Logbook Archives, our lore-centric series, and this week, we're examining the most important - and mysterious - faction in the Metroid universe: the Galactic Federation! Little is known about this organization, but we go over and cover everything we know, starting with the history and formation, through the Prime Era, Project Golem, the Metroid Crisis, the Bottle Ship Incident, the BSL Incident, and ZDR's E.M.M.I. theft. We examine the tech Sylux stole, the mysterious Ringleader faction, and the Metroid experiments. To end it off, we speculate on what role the Galactic Federation could play in Metroid Prime 4 and Metroid 6!

Andy is out this week on the pod, meaning Dak and Doom are here to take the wheel! Last week, we discussed the Metroid Prime 4: Beyond Nintendo Treehouse demo in great detail to fully analyze its contents. This week, we gathered ALL of the official info on the game we could find; from gameplay to developer quotes, and attempted to use that information to predict where the game's story is heading. What are Sylux's motivations? Do the new "Fusion" Metroids have a relationship to the psychic abilities Samus acquires? Should the Lamorn be trusted?
